Description

This was an assignment that was due for my children's illustration class. Children's illustration is way out of my element, but for me to be the best I can be, I must be as diverse as humanly possible. The assignment was to create a piece with children of different ethnicites engaging with one another in any activity. Me, being the only masuline individual of two males in a class of fifteen people, I'm usually the one that doesn't have the lil' cute sketches of children standing around, smiling at everything on some halmark bullsh*t. My ideas are usually children being children: mischievious and acting off, doing those ignorant but humorous things that children are known to do. Of course, looking at the sketchs that people had set up for this class, all you saw were children on swings, children mildly playing in snow, children trick or treating; basically all idealized with their token african american, latin or asian american. Me, being one of the two minorities in that class, and the only one from urban upbringing, I can't bring myself to do that. Every piece I have has different minorites in it along with whites, and I try to make it so that you can't quite pin-point their ethnicity. I don't do south park and put big T's on every minority I draw.

Okay now that I vented out a bit, This piece was done with graphite, pen & ink and then a blue-ish ink wash that for some reason dried with a greenish tint. I like this piece enough that I threw a kid version of myself in it just for a lil' added effect. It didn't go over so great in class, they figured it was too Anime, most likely because I draw children really animated with large eyes for added expression. I still like it, maybe I'll touch it up and add it to my professional porfolio

Ok, Martinez showed me this the other day and I just freakin love it. (Ahem, and it has nothing to do with the little girl in chun-li buns, clearly pwning a little boy...)

Dude, screw your class if they gave you flack for not doing something predictable. Ill bet you anything, you show this to a bunch of little kids compared to what you described, they'll respond to a drawing like this all day. I dunno about you, but when I was a kid I spent more time playing power rangers than I did standing around in the snow smiling.
